The Heel Method

"Every behavior is a
conversation.
Most people are just
not listening yet."

Four problems.
Four approaches.

Each behavioral challenge has its own logic. Understanding that logic is the first step toward changing it.

Column 01
Reactivity
"The lunge at the skateboard is not aggression. It is a dog who has never been taught that the world is survivable."

Leash reactivity is the most misunderstood behavior I work with. Owners arrive convinced their shepherd is "dominant" or "broken." What I see is a dog who learned, early and repeatedly, that distance is safety. The lunge bought space. It worked. We rewired that logic — systematically, without punishment, without flooding. The leash becomes a conversation instead of a chain.

What actually changes

Threshold distance shrinks from 40 feet to 6. Dogs who couldn't pass a parked bicycle now walk through farmer's markets. The work takes weeks, not days. It holds.

Column 02
Separation Anxiety
"The dog who destroys the door is not spiteful. She is drowning. We teach her to float."

Separation anxiety is a panic disorder. Not a training problem in the traditional sense — you cannot command your way out of a panic attack. What works is systematic desensitization: absences measured in seconds before minutes, independence built as a skill the same way we build a solid sit. The process is slow, unglamorous, and the only thing that actually works.

The protocol

We film the first session. Most owners haven't seen what their dog does the moment the door closes. That footage becomes the baseline. Progress is measured in camera footage, not owner intuition. By week six, most dogs sleep through a forty-minute absence.

Puppy Foundations
"The eight-week window does not wait for you to feel ready. Neither does the adolescent brain at six months."

The most expensive training is the training you skip at eight weeks. Bite inhibition, surface exposure, the sound of a garbage truck — this is the work that determines whether you have a confident adult dog or an anxious one. YouTube gives you fifty contradictory opinions. I give you a sequenced plan, week by week, calibrated to your puppy's individual temperament.

What the first six months build

Puppies who complete foundations training have measurably lower rates of fear-based reactivity at 18 months. The data is consistent. The window is real. We use it.

Sport Precision
"The difference between a qualifying run and a placement is usually the handler, not the dog."

Rally obedience, nosework, disc — precision sport training requires a different conversation than pet manners. We work on handler mechanics as much as dog behavior: where your eyes go, how you carry your shoulders, the half-second lag between your cue and your dog's response. Competition dogs are athletes. They need an athlete's coach.

Pre-regionals preparation

Eight-week intensives available for competition handlers within six weeks of a trial. Video analysis of previous runs included. We identify the three behaviors costing you points and build a targeted protocol around them.
